Toyota Unveils Off-Road Models of the Tundra and Sequoia at Chicago Auto Show

Toyota Showcases Tundra and Tacoma at the Chicago Auto Show

This week at the Chicago Auto Show Toyota showed off its new trim offerings for the Toyota Tundra and the Toyota Tacoma. The new trim on these two great trucks was the TRD Sport Trim. The new trim increases the off-road capabilities of both trucks, so we’re excited to see how they perform.

TRD stands for Toyota Racing Department and Toyota is really bringing it to the table with their TRD trim packages. Last year 140,000 Toyota trucks and SUVS rolled off the sales lot with one of Toyota’s TRD packages.

The TRD Sport Trim for the Toyota Sequoia and the Toyota Tundra have Bilstein shocks, front and back anti-sway bars, 20-inch alloy wheels and some sharp appearance upgrades.

Toyota Tundra

The Toyota Tundra pickup truck has been available on the US market since 1999. The Tundra was the first full-size truck made by a Japanese manufacturer to be available in the US market. At first the Toyota Tundra share many features with the Toyota T100 and the Toyota Tacoma, but over time the Tundra and Tacoma differed more and the T100 line was discontinued.

Interestingly, NASA used the Toyota Tundra to pull the Space Shuttle Endeavour across the Manchester Boulevard Bridge in 2012 when the 4 self-propelled robotic transporters were found to be too heavy due to bridge weight restrictions.

Toyota Tacoma

The Toyota Tacoma pickup truck first hit the US market in 1995. The first generation of Tacoma’s was marketed as a compact pickup, but later generations changed to a mid-size classification for the Toyota Tacoma. The Tacoma was introduced as a replacement for Toyota’s Hilux, which was marketed in the US with the name Toyota Pickup. The Tacoma was superior when it came to comfort, handling, ride quality and safety.

The second generation of the Toyota was unveiled in 2004 at the Chicago Auto Show and it showed a larger more powerful Tacoma.

In 2015 Toyota released a Back to the Future concept version of the Toyota Tacoma in celebration of the movie franchise’s 30th anniversary. The concept was inspired by the 1985 pickup created by Toyota for the film. Unfortunately, this was a one off concept pickup and Toyota has no plans to offer it as a package or trim level.

Toyota Off-Roading at its Best

Thanks to the new Tundra and Tacoma TRD Sport Trim offerings, Toyota continues to offer excellent off-roading packages. You can expect to see the Tundra and Tacoma with the new TRD Sport Trim hitting the market in 2018.
