One of Oregon’s Best Places for Off-Roading

Elderberry Flats is located an hour north of Medford, Oregon and four and a half hours south of Portland, Oregon. Elderberry Flats has marked trails, but they are only lightly maintained. It offers a good mix of difficulty levels, but they are geared more towards beginners and amateurs.

Hours of Operation

Elderberry Flats is open year round, but except for fire season.


To get to Elderberry Flats from Medford, Oregon, follow the directions below:

• Head west on I-5 until you reach exit 48
• Turn right onto Depot Street and go one-tenth of a mile
• Turn left onto Pine Street and go half a mile
• Turn left onto Main Street and go half a mile
• Turn right onto West Evans Creek Road and go for 18 miles
• Turn left onto BLM Road 34-3-24 and go for 9 miles
• You’ll find the campground entrance on the left side of the road

Most types of off-road vehicle are permitted at Elderberry Flats and include:

  • 4x4s

  • Jeeps

  • Lifted Trucks

  • Dune Buggys

Vehicle Restrictions & Guidelines

The facility does not have any vehicle width restrictions, but does limit noise to 99 dB. You are required to have a spark arrestor on all vehicles. Helmets are required for riders under 18 years old.

Trail Types

The trails at Elderberry Flats range from rugged rutted roads to twisty singletracks. There are lots of fun steep hills at Elderberry Flats for off-roaders to enjoy. The trail are mostly hard pack, but some gravel, mud, and loose rocks are mixed in.

Costs and Permits

You’ll need an Oregon off-highway vehicle permit to off-road at Elderberry Flats.


There isn’t much in the way of amenities at Elderberry Flats, most the staging areas aren’t even marked. The most popular staging area is at Elderberry Campground. Elderberry Campground has 11 free campsites and each comes with a picnic table, a fire ring, and trash receptacle. The nearby creek has some swimming holes.
